FAQ German phone numbers

Find clear answers about German numbers and how they work for your business.

We offer three main types: Local numbers (e.g., Berlin 030, Munich 089) for a local presence, National numbers (032) for a nationwide presence not tied to a specific city, and 0800 Freephone numbers (Toll-Free) which are free for the caller.

For local geographic numbers (like 030), the Bundesnetzagentur generally requires proof of a local address. However, for National (032) and Toll-Free (0800) numbers, a physical presence is typically not required, making them ideal for international businesses.

A 0800 number allows customers to call you for free from any German landline or mobile network. You, as the number holder, pay for the incoming calls. It’s the gold standard for customer service in Germany.

German numbers start with the country code +49. When listing it internationally, use the format +49 30 12345678 (dropping the leading ‘0’ of the area code). Domestically: 030 12345678.

Once necessary documents are received (if required), activation is often very quick, usually within 1 business day.
